Domain Name and Hosting: a beginner's guide

Computing has a knack for complicating things with its jargon. When you launch your website, two terms constantly come up: Domain Name and Hosting. Here is the simplest metaphor to understand what they are.

The house metaphor

Imagine you want to build a house (your website):

  • Hosting: It's the land you buy (or rent) to build the house. It's the physical storage space (a server) where all your photos and texts will be located.
  • Domain Name: It's your postal address (e.g. my-business.com). Without this address, your customers will never find your house, even if it exists on the land.

The ownership trap

Be very careful: many unscrupulous agencies buy the domain name under their name instead of yours. Result? If you want to change providers in a few years, they will hold your address hostage.

Always demand that the domain name is registered in your own name or your company's name.

Why have a ".com" or ".fr" address?

A professional address is reassuring. If you use an email address ending in @gmail.com or a free domain name like mysite.wixsite.com, you send a signal of amateurism to your prospects. Buying a domain name costs about 15€ per year, it's the most profitable investment for your credibility.

The SSL certificate (HTTPS), essential security

In addition to hosting and the domain name, there is a third element that has become mandatory today: the SSL certificate. This allows the small security padlock to appear in the browser bar and guarantees that the data exchanged between your site and your customers is encrypted. Without this certificate, Google Chrome will display a red "Not secure" warning message, which will instantly scare away your visitors. In the global management of a web project, a good provider always includes domain name management, hosting on fast servers, and SSL certificate configuration, so you never have to worry about these complex technical aspects. It's the foundation of a healthy digital presence.
